If my books can help children become readers, then I feel I have accomplished something important. – Roald Dahl

Children’s literature can be divided into two broad genres – a saccharine world of rainbows and happy endings or a darker world filled with otherworldly beings and surreal towns. For every Perrault and Andersen tale there exists an offbeat counterpart found in works by the likes of Roald Dahl and Chris Van Allsburg. Closer to home, an interesting book for children surfaced recently – entitled Twee and the Mysterious Howl  – featuring the literary talent of local writer Rosalind Chua and the skills of Lithuanian artist Artur Širin.

Twee tells the story of a young person and her talking, airborne dog wandering the streets on a quest to investigate strange sound outside her window late one night. Twee lives in a strange and slightly sinister town that is reminiscent of old Penang streets and the Spirited Away netherworld of Chihiro Ogino. Twee is the first instalment of a trilogy. This is Chua’s first book for children. Twee was launched in Penang on 8 November. An European launch is planned for 2015.

Twee and the Mysterious Howl is now available at Areca Books.
