Historical stories which speak of the bravery and struggle of Sultan Mahmud with his wife Tun Fatimah against the Portuguese are outstanding events of the Malays’ struggle against Western colonizers in the Malay world. Sultan Mahmud who was always receiving encouragement from his wife Tun Fatimah have changed from a cruel king into a Malay hero, fill of patriotic spirit against the Portuguese. The struggles and sacrifices of Tun Fatimah in her lifetime in an effort to return the Malay sovereignty especially in fighting against the Portuguese in Melaka has bestowed her with the title “Serikandi Melaka” or “Tun Fatimah Serikandi Melayu”. At this time, the name ‘Tun Fatimah’ has been immortalized in many places, including Sekolah Tun Fatimah in Johor Baharu, Jalan Tun Fatimah, Stadium Tun Fatimah in Melaka and also Anugerah Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam Tun Fatimah.
