The Malayan Elephant is the largest of the Big Five and conservation challenges require massive funds and great efforts in its management. Malaysia was originally an agro-based economy and for all intents and purposes has been immensely dependent on land. An extremely serious man-elephant conflict came out. In its search for food the elephant was probably pleasantly surprised to discover that oil palm was edible. Unfortunately, its great appetite for oil palm led to massive damage of the crop. It would be extremely rare to find any government that would tolerate such massive losses in defense of the elephant. It may come as a great surprise that no order was issued to completely wipe out the elephant.
