The Way That Lives in the Heart is a richly detailed ethnographic analysis of the practice of Chinese religion in the modern, multicultural Southeast Asian city of Penang, Malaysia. Focusing on popular religious culture and spirit mediumship—an ancient form of ritual practice that remains vital in southern China and Southeast Asia—the author explores how individuals navigate patterns of action and interpretation to control fate, luck, prosperity, and health. Drawing on extensive interviews with twenty-two practicing spirit mediums, some observed while in a trance state, the book sheds light on the veneration of figures such as the Monkey God, the Third Prince, and the Vagabond Buddha, offering an illuminating perspective on living religious traditions as part of everyday life.
