5 February 2009 was the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth, and November was the 150th anniversary of the publication of ‘On the Origin of Species’ (1858). In 2009, scientists around the world commemorated this publication as one of the greatest contributions to biology. In 1938, eighty years later, another independent scholar proposed that the Qur’an, written centuries before the discovery of evolution, revealed that human life was an emergence from earlier forms of life and that if one understood the images and illustrations of the Qur’an properly, the book suggested that this process is eternal, continuous and beyond the control of Man and of all human endeavours. Hence the only way humans can contribute to this understanding is to develop knowledge even further beyond all obstacles and limitations and to recognise that life is given for the purpose of self-realisation and consciousness of the wonder of it all.
