Set against the violent backdrop of the May 1969 racial disturbances in Kuala Lumpur, this historical narrative follows Melati, a sixteen-year-old music enthusiast dealing with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder. Melati perceives her condition as a malevolent entity demanding constant rituals to protect her loved ones. When ethnic conflict erupts during a cinema outing, she is separated from her mother, forcing her to navigate a fractured, chaotic cityscape with the assistance of an unexpected companion in order to reunite with her family.
