What would be the fate of the Baba and Nyonya identity as they cope with the pressure of modernity and globalisation in this 21st century?
While adjusting to the modern lifestyle today, the problem of identifying members from the Baba and Nyonya became formidable. Experiencing vast simplifications and adaptations in their current lifestyle, the survival of the Baba and Nyonya identity lies within the willingness of the Baba and Nyonya themselves in accepting further change and shift in their identity.
Instead of clinging to their colourful past, members of the Baba and Nyonya community must acknowledge the fluid nature of their identity while bearing in mind that evolution was and still is the foundation of the Baba and Nyonya identity. Their ability to strike a balance between the past and present greatly affects the future of Baba and Nyonya.
The book was recently awarded the National Book Award 2024, under the category of “Special Award: Best Luxury Book (Arts and Culture)” by the National Book Development Foundation of Malaysia.
