Set against the dramatic and terrifying backdrop of Indonesia during the 1965 military coup, this biographical memoir recounts the formative years of Tari Budiardjo. When General Suharto forcefully takes control and plunges Jakarta into a climate of fear and political purge, the author’s family faces sudden ruin. Her parents, who worked as progressive intellectuals and civil servants under Sukarno’s regime, are locked away without trial. Left to fend for herself amidst a landscape defined by military presence, neighborhood informants, and constant suspicion, the young protagonist balances normal teenage concerns like youth crushes and daily curfews with secret underground operations for the resistance, offering an extraordinary personal perspective on a dark chapter of Southeast Asian history.
