Rumah Kutai is an old residential architecture of Perak, which can be found alongside the river banks of Sungai Perak. They are also known as Rumah Bumbung Melayu (literally Malay Roof House). Malay architecture is not merely about shelter and building. It is a manifestation of thoughts and understanding towards their environment, culture and faith. These three domains become the fundamental needs in building a house in the traditional Malay architecture. The form, materials, spatial organization and ornamentations were wisely built and respond harmoniously with the environment and surrounding, physically and spiritually.

Sadly, indications point to the fact that these houses are under threat of extinction. This book is therefore a timely effort undertaken by Institute Darul Ridzuan and Centre for Knowledge & Understanding of Tropical Architecture & Interior to inculcate awareness and appreciation for this style of architecture. It is a fascinating pictorial journey of architecture, people and memories.
