The Thaipusam tradition was brought to Penang through the South Indian diaspora during the late 18th century. The festival has evolved and grown to such an extent that it has assimilated unique local characteristics and traditions. Every year during Thaipusam, thousands of devotees make their way to Penang to participate and witness this “Journey of Faith” that is centered at the Nattukottai Chettiars Thandayuthapani Temple and the Arulmigu Batathandayuthapani Hilltop Temple. Both these temples are fondly referred to in Tamil by the locals as Keel-Kovil (temple at the base of hill) and Mel-Kovil (temple at top of hill) respectively. Thaipusam has also drawn a cosmopolitan following of many non-Indians.

The reason behind the publication of this book is to fulfil the quest to rekindle the community ‘s devotion and pioneering effort in conducting the Thaipusam festival for Lord Murugan. This book serves as the contribution of the Nattukottai Chettiar community in line with George Town being conferred as a UNESCO world heritage site. The pictures and documents presented in this book will speak volumes of this amazing festival and the involvement of the Nattukottai Chettiar community.
