The account of the non-sectarian Malaysian Penang-based political party Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia traces its origins in the pre-independence period. The first chapter overviews the country’s political scene up to 1968 when GRM was founded. From 1969 until 2008 the increasingly “Chinese-based” party held Penang’s Chief Ministership but was then defeated. The reasons for this reversal and future possibilities are discussed in the final chapter. With black-and-white photographs, bibliography and tabulated election results.
