The monograph of 8 Pioneers of Malaysian Art Exhibition with a supplement on Peter Harris focuses on the early development of Malaysian art and the contributions of eight pioneers of Malaysian art of whom seven were from Penang. They are Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng, Dato’ Tay Hooi Keat, Abdullah Ariff, Kuo Ju Ping, Khaw Sia, Lee Cheng Yong and Yong Mun Sen. The eighth artist selected by Dato’ Dr Tan Chee Khuan is Dato’ Mohd Hoessein Enas, who stayed in Penang in 1948-49 before moving on to Kuala Lumpur.
The supplement on Peter Harris, who was Malaysia’s first art superintendent and founder of the Wednesday Art Group in Kuala Lumpur. Even he stopped and stayed at E & O Penang for a few days in 1951 before reporting for work in Kuala Lumpur. He was to make Penang his favourite city, to visit Teng and Mun Sen during his stay in Malaya, as it was known then. This book confirmed the importance of Penang as the first art centre in Malaysia.
